There are many reasons why users may require alternative formats and in many cases are entitled to request formally under the Disability Discrimination Act. There are now many issues surrounding obtaining alternative formats rather than simply the tradition alternatives to hardcopy text as increasingly within the learning experience many formats may be included such as video clips, podcasts and e-learning materials. This highlights an important point: no format is universally accessible. What is important is the ability to source any content in a variety of alternative formats when the current format presents a barrier to use.

Since 2000, the vast majority of textbooks published have had a corresponding PDF file. Many disabled users are able to make good use of this digital format but there were often barriers preventing these files being used effectively by some users. Some of these were due to user awareness, others due to library / learner support staff experience and others due to lack of awareness by publishers. The JISC TechDis service has been working with publishers for several years to help bridge the gap between publisher and disabled user.
