Netskills was invited in mid-2008 to plan to undertake a Supporting Studies & Synthesis project for the JISC Institutional Responses to Emergent Technologies (IRET) programme. Consultant Trainers Will Allen and Steve Boneham delivered the project, with external consultancy provided by James Cornford of Newcastle University.

The Netskills project team supported the programme, liaising with the JISC programme manager, Rob Bristow, and synthesising the outputs from 6 pilot projects. Two highly successful programme meetings were arranged and facilitated with attendees including all pilot projects plus external stakeholders.

This link shows a video which introduces the JISC IRET programme, defines what emergent technologies are and the opportunities and challenges they present to educational institutions.

It is intended to be used as a primer for the associated workshop activities, but also to have standalone value for those considering how their institution should respond to emergent technologies.

It was developed through interactions with pilot projects in the IRET programme and consultation with the wider educational community.

The following exercises are designed to provide a framework for these discussions and to highlight areas where change may be needed. We recommend that your institution use these as part of a wider set of activities across all subsystems of the IRET 5Rs model to identify and develop a coherent response to emergent technologies.
