The National Academic Mailing List Service, known as 'JISCMail', is a service designed specifically for the further and higher education and research communities and is one of a number of services provided by JISC Advance therefore making it the foremost strategic collaboration tool within the academic community.

JISCMail uses the world wide web and e-mail to enable groups of academics and support staff to talk to each other and to share information. There are thousands of groups covering many categories. If you are unable to find a group on your chosen subject and you can satisfy the JISC criteria, you may start a group of your own.

In this seminar, Alan Cann of the University of Leicester considers the potential of social tools for researchers, based on both his own extensive experience and those of researchers interviewed as part of a study for the publication "Social Media: a guide for researchers."

Sometimes dismissed as trivial or irrelevant, Alan argues that social tools actually offer researchers an opportunity to improve the quality of their work through an enhanced ability to find, use and disseminate information. He considers how personal networks can help create, curate, filter and amplify relevant information as part of the research process.

SlideShare is a community web service that allows sharing and embedding of presentations that contain images, graphics, text and embedded video, created using PowerPoint, PDF or Open Office that are uploaded by the community. The service provides a mechanism for soliciting feedback, which has uses for teaching and learning, and its ability to be embedded allows the community to distribute your presentations to a wider audience.

The project is part of the Embedding and Communicating BCE programme stream , which is focused on promotion of BCE both within JISC and the JISC community – as well as outwards from JISC.
